Musical beds…

We are done with cribs.  Yep, D-O-N-E!  We’ve had a crib (sometimes 2) in our house for the last 6.5 years.  It’s hard to believe that this piece of furniture will no longer be a fixture in our house.

Bennett (to Sean’s delight and to my fear) is in the big boy bed aka bottom bed of the bunks.  He is doing pretty well.  As each night passes, he affords himself a little more independence at which time I head to my bedroom and let Sean patiently get him back into bed (all is fair because I would be happy if he was still in the crib).  He does well once he settles in for the night and won’t come out of his room in the morning until Sean or I come get him or until Bauer wakes up and comes out.  It’s kinda adorably weird.  I seem to remember Bree and Bauer being at our bedside at the crack of dawn many a morning.  I have no doubt this next step of independence (much to my dismay) will come sooner rather than later.

When Sean took down the crib in the boy’s room, we were both amazed by the amount of space that it created for “play” to occur for everyone.  Empty space to build with legos and create elaborate scenes involving superheros and cars was apparently missing with so many beds in that room.  Who knew?!

So all this open space got my mind thinking and since I can never just have one change at a time, I decided it was finally time to get rid of Bree’s queen bed/dresser (my old furniture before I got married) and get her a twin bed like every other 6 year old.  I wanted her to have some open space in her room as well to do cartwheels and play games and all the other stuff every other 6 year old does.  Bree was beyond excited about this game plan.

After some touch and go moments involving a smoky mattress from Craig’s List and a crib that converted to a full sized bed and not the twin I envisioned, we found the perfect bed/nightstand set for Bree late Saturday night.

This new furniture not only provided plenty of play space, but also removed the queen sized space under her bed where she would store all her treasures (read future hoarder).  This makes mommy very very happy.  It took me no less than two hours just to go through all her treasures this time around.  A whole trash bag of real trash and two trash bags of donations later, her new room was ready to show-off.

I found this gem from my sister’s room, then my room and now Bree’s room tucked away in a drawer.  July 17 13_00050_f The new bed! We now have a “under the sea” and “butterfly” dueling themes…as we got to use the awesome Target bedding from when Bauer and Bree temporarily shared a room. July 17 13_00051_f

Dorsey (the fish) now has a new vantage point…she seems very happy about it.July 17 13_00053_f Those “bree” letters on the desk were given to Bree by my first Panhellenic exec officers at UTA when she was born.  Loved being able to find a new place to put them in her room.July 17 13_00047_f

Remember when I mentioned cartwheels???!!!  It did not take long!July 17 13_00055_f Who says a twin bed doesn’t provide enough room for three kids to jump :) July 17 13_00014_f

All in all, we have spent more time in both the kids rooms playing since this game of musical beds commenced…

Hopefully, this trend will continue.  Even better, maybe the trend will be more of the kids playing together in their rooms and more of Sean and I on the couch drinking wine/beer.

Just saying…
