Married with kids…

This past weekend, I had a few moments where I truly realized that Sean and I had become part of that official world out there “Married with kids”.  Below is a list of a few of things that happened that led me to this conclusion:

1. While feeding Bauer a bottle, I worked on a my to do list by writing on the paper on Bree’s activity table with a crayon.

2. Sean and I’s date night consisted of giving our two under two a bath simultanously and then taking videos of Bree avoid bedtime and Bauer spit up :)

3. I realized on Sunday morning that Bree and I’s last 3 meals had all involved hot dogs and ketchup.

4. I researched pumpkin patches on the internet and knew that both Sean and I believe that the corn maze is a must.

5. Sean and I both get more excited than Bree when we realize that Tivo is recording a new episode of Sesame Street or Curious George.

6.  I know deep down that there will be tears when I make Bree take off her Halloween costume, but I still can’t help but give her the opportunity to try it on…it is so darn adorable…pictures to come on a future blog.

WARNING…LONG RAMBLING BLOG TO FOLLOW, but pictures are the reward at the end :)

This weekend marked the end of my maternity leave so these next few weeks will involve the Murphys getting into a new routine of sorts where on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Mom will head to work, Bree will head to school and Bauer and Dad will have some male bonding at home.  I’m very excited about the arrangement we have worked out and I think we are so blessed to have the flexibility we have with both our jobs!

Today was my first day back at work and it was wonderful.  You never realize how much you miss the interactions with students and co-workers until you get back, but it really felt like I was going back to my home away from home.  My mind was racing as I was trying to get back up to speed, but after a few days I’m sure I’ll be back in the thick of things like no time has passed!

This past weekend we got a chance to relax with the kiddos.  Bauer is doing great sleeping through the night and has started taking longer naps during the day as well.  It feels more bearable each day to have two under two.  Bree is becoming more and more of an independent diva who is challenging her boundaries each and every moment of the day.  My favorite new tactic of hers involves her stealing Bauer’s bottle from his mouth and running away with it.  She acts like she is helping feed him (ahhh, how cute you may say!) and then she pops it out of his mouth and runs as fast as she can.  Its priceless the first time, but then its just infuriating that I fell for the same trick again.  We’ve also had a couple incidents of toys hitting Bauer in the head and we are working hard on the concept of “I’m sorry”.

She is pushing the boundaries at her little school as well.  She likes to play on the big kid playground equipment instead of the one for people more her size.  I don’t blame her for this at all because we let her play on any equipment she can master at any and all playgrounds.  I explained this to her teachers at her school and they directly said that an 18 month old girl should not get to decide what she can or cannot handle.  I guess that’s where we differ in parenting philosophies and it took every bone in my body to not say, “She’s almost 21 months by the way” :)  Oh the joys of having the wild kid in the 1 year old class at Mother’s Day Out!  We have many parent teacher conferences in our future!

Bauer is continuing to get stronger everyday and is a pretty adaptable kid overall except when he’s hungry.  He found his legs tonight and is very proud about that.  He also has learned the concept of grabbing things and it is very hard to pry those little fingers apart!  We placed him in the bumbo tonight for the first time as well and he liked it a lot for about 5 minutes and then lost interest.  The funniest part was that we left it on the table and while I was feeding Bauer I looked over to see that Bree had climbed up into the chair and onto the table and was sitting in the bumbo.  I guess it is hard for her to let go of that part of her childhood.  We laughed for a second and then had to tell her how “dangerous” that was.  She proceeded to do it again and was sent to timeout…oh the life of the almost 21 month old!
